Cardiac Arrest strikes people of all ages and fitness levels,
usually without warning. Many of these lives could be saved if bystanders act promptly to phone 911 and begin CPR, and if trained responders provide defibrillation within minutes. These could be your clients, friends or co-workers.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, approximately 6,500 to 7,000 cardiac arrests occur each year in Ontario alone. The odds of surviv
al for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are approximately five per cent. With each passing minute, the probability of survival declines by seven-to-10 percent. Only 350 people survive out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest in Ontario each year, but if AEDs become more common – like fire extinguishers, there’s potential to save 3,300 people across Ontario each year.
"By putting more AEDs in public locations, we hope to make it more likely that an AED will be on scene sooner and help improve survival rates." Heart disease and stroke account for 38% of all deaths and kill over 79,000 Canadians every year. With a third of our time at work, there is a 33% chance of having a heart attack or stroke on the job. When sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes, seconds count. Most SCA cases are in fact treatable, but due to the lack of AEDs in the workplace, the victim has no chance.
