Connected features are useful, but the reason for installing an AED is to help someone in cardiac arrest. A person who is unresponsive and not breathing normally needs an immediate response: call 911, begin CPR and use an AED as soon as it arrives. The AED evaluates the rhythm and determines whether a shock is appropriate. Some cardiac arrests do not involve a shockable rhythm. Responders need to continue following the CPR instructions even when the device advises no shock. For a school board, municipality or business with several sites, each location needs a workable plan. The employee who retrieves the AED should not have to call head office to find a key. Equipment access and staff familiarity belong in the same review as pricing and connectivity.
