AED Reimbursement for Ontario Construction Projects
Ontario construction projects are entering a new regulatory era with the introduction of mandatory Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) under O. Reg. 157/25. For many constructors, this change raises important questions around cost, compliance, and implementation. To support safer job sites while easing the financial burden, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has approved an AED reimbursement program for eligible construction projects.
This reimbursement program is designed to help offset the cost of purchasing Health Canada–licensed AEDs, which are now required on many Ontario job sites as of January 1, 2026. Rather than delaying compliance, constructors are encouraged to prepare early, select compliant equipment, and ensure proper documentation is in place before applications open.
Understanding the AED Reimbursement Program
The reimbursement program recognizes that AEDs are a critical life-saving device and that cost should not be a barrier to improving worker safety. By reimbursing eligible projects for AED purchases made within the approved window, Ontario is reinforcing the importance of proactive emergency preparedness in the construction sector.
🗓 Applications are expected to open January 1, and AEDs must be purchased between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2027 to qualify.
Who May Qualify for AED Reimbursement
Based on currently available guidance, a project may qualify if all of the following conditions are met:
-
You are the constructor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
-
The project is expected to last three months or longer
-
20 or more workers are regularly employed
-
A trained first aid worker is present whenever work is underway
-
The AED is licensed as a medical device by Health Canada
-
Only one AED reimbursement is claimed per eligible project
Because only one AED can be claimed per project, choosing the right AED the first time is essential.
